Was driving to work. Thinking about the next scene I’d be writing in my novel. It’s time for some action. In the distance there was a huge bank of clouds. They looked angry. You know . . . almost black, looking like they were trying to consume the entire sky. Could I work these clouds into the scene? Describe the thunder as the cloud’s angry voice? Nah. Too cheesy. A bright red cardinal darted across the road just inches from the hood of the car. Was he on a suicide mission? Was he, like the squirrels in that commercial, trying to make me crash? Was he startled into flight by a bad guy? Hmmmmm. Then, there’s a hitchhiker up ahead. By the time I remember him my brain is brimming with bad guys. Killers. Jagged knife blades and cold fiendish eyes. Talk about cheesy. Well, I guess I’m just tired. It is almost 2 am after all. Guess I’ll go to bed. Oh crap . . . . my brain won’t be concocting a great scene for my novel. It’ll be hard at work creating a nightmare. Perhaps I’ll find myself in the middle of a dark and stormy night . . .
I’ll let you know how it turns out. In the meantime, don’t miss my books! The Seed, a novel of suspense about unethical biotechnology that was nominated by a professor at Green Mountain College to be required reading. And the Johnny Vic historical adventure series that was endorsed by the head of the Teaching American History Program at Castleton State College. Find them at: www.annrichduncan.com.
